Live programme planning

Turn a rough agenda into a plan people can run

scenepulse is a practical course in running orders, cue sheets and rehearsal schedules for live programmes. It is built for aspiring coordinators and junior producers, and has run since 2017.

Practical modules · Original sample rundowns · Instructor feedback

Practice first

Learn by building real planning documents

Each module asks you to produce something a team could use on the day. You start from a rough agenda and finish with a sequence, a cue sheet or a handover that others can follow without you in the room.

  • Rundowns from rough agendas

    Rundowns from rough agendas

Turn an unstructured agenda into segments with start times, owners and fallback options, then compare your version with the instructor's written notes and adjust where yours is unclear.

  • Cue sheets read at a glance

Cue sheets read at a glance

Write cue lines that presenters, camera operators and sound technicians can follow under pressure, then test them by reading them aloud against a running clock.

  • Rehearsals that fit the venue

    Rehearsals that fit the venue

Plan rehearsal blocks, tech checks and walkthroughs around venue access and speaker availability, so every minute on stage has a clear purpose and a named owner.

Six modules from agenda to handover

The course follows the order in which a programme is planned: sequence, timing, cues, rehearsals, streamed contributors and finally the documents that carry the show to another team. Each module builds on the one before it.

  1. Foundations of the Running Order

Learn how a draft agenda becomes a clear sequence of segments. You assign start times and owners, then add fallback options for the moments most likely to slip. The result is a running order a whole team can trust.

  2. Segment Timing and Pacing

Practice timing segments one by one and building buffers between them. You then adjust a programme that runs long or short, deciding what to trim, move or stretch. Pacing becomes a decision rather than a guess.

  3. Writing Cue Sheets

Write cue sheets that presenters, camera operators and sound technicians can read at a glance. You work on layout, wording and the order of information. Clear cues keep a live show calm from the first minute.

  4. Rehearsal Schedules

Plan rehearsal blocks, tech checks and walkthroughs that fit venue access and speaker availability. You build a schedule with realistic changeovers between each block. Rehearsal time then goes where it matters most.

  5. Streamed Discussion Planning

Prepare moderators, guests and remote contributors for a streamed panel. You mark clear handover points so nobody talks over anyone else. The plan covers who speaks, who cues the next voice and who steps in.

  6. Production Handovers and Notes

Create production notes and handover documents so any team can run the programme from the page. You record decisions, contacts and contingencies in one place. A good handover outlasts the person who wrote it.

How we approach the work

  1. Clarity

A plan is only useful if someone else can read it. We ask learners to cut vague wording, name an owner for every segment and keep each page easy to scan.

  2. Preparation

Most live problems are visible days before the show. We teach learners to look for them early, build buffers and write fallback options before anything goes wrong.

  3. Teamwork

Presenters, technicians and producers read the same documents. Every exercise considers who will use the page and what they need to know in the moment.
